Anthropic Found A Secret Mental Room Inside Claude
What if an AI had a secret mental room where it silently puzzled over ideas before ever saying a word out loud?
Researchers at Anthropic say they discovered just such a hidden space inside Claude, separate from the model's normal output pathways.
In that space, the system appears to weigh concepts, test reasoning, and reshape answers before exposing any finished thought to the user.
The finding is already changing how safety teams probe models, because the hidden reasoning could diverge from the spoken answer in subtle, risky ways.
If a chatbot can think privately without telling you, should we audit that hidden mind the same way we audit what it actually says?
